Blondy's Biography

Blondy’s roots in Columbia, South Carolina, gave rise to a voice that was strong, original, and unforgettable. As part of The Sequence, she toured with legendary acts like Parliament Funkadelic, the Gap Band, Cameo, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, and the Sugarhill Gang, among others. “Funk You Up” has remained a cultural touchstone for decades, sampled by artists such as Dr. Dre, De La Soul, Erykah Badu, En Vogue, Biz Markie, Trina, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

Beyond the stage and spotlight, Blondy has evolved into a powerhouse behind the scenes. With more than 40 years of experience in the entertainment industry, she has worn many hats—artist, songwriter, road manager for Angie Stone, mentor, manager, and educator. Passionate about giving back, she founded Education Through Talent, a nonprofit program in partnership with The Urban League, aimed at guiding youth who dream of working in the entertainment industry. The year-long curriculum covers every facet of the business, and stands as a testament to Blondy’s commitment to empowering the next generation.

Blondy is not only respected for her contributions but deeply loved for her humility, wisdom, and willingness to share her knowledge. Her journey is not just one of fame and firsts, but of purpose and passion—still writing new chapters in an already iconic legacy.

Gwendolyn “Blondy” Chisolm is a living legend in the world of hip hop. As one-third of The Sequence, the first all-female rap group, Blondy helped break barriers and pave the way for generations of women in hip hop. Discovered in 1979 by Sylvia Robinson, the visionary CEO of Sugar Hill Records, Blondy and her groupmates Cheryl “Cheryl the Pearl” Cook and Angie “Angie B” Stone were flown to New Jersey after performing their iconic track “Funk You Up” backstage at a Sugar Hill Gang concert. Just teenagers at the time—Blondy only 17—the trio made history when the record went certified gold in just three weeks, becoming the first rap record released by a female group and only the second single released by the groundbreaking label.
